Kinetic Energy and Quasi-biennial Oscillation

چکیده

The modulation of the vertical flux of kinetic energy to the stratosphere by the pressure-work effect at 100 mb is compared with variations in the hemispheric kinetic cnergy, the horizontal momentum and heat transports a t “low” latitudes, and the tropical zonal wind and temperature for the lower stratosphere. It is deduced that the variation of the vertical flux of geopotential is in phase with the kinetic energy in the lower stratosphere and is statistically related to the time rate of change of the horizontal transports of heat and momentum at 30’N. The association of these results to the general circulation of the lower stratosphere is considered.

Note concerning the Period of the Quasi-biennial Oscillation

The period of the quasi-biennial oscillation is examined through the use of a harmonic procedure which allows one to examine periods of interest without omission of any data. On the basis of 8, and 5th years, of mean-monthly zonal-wind and temperature data in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres, respectively, it is found that: (1) A quasi-biennial oscillation in zonal-wind exists in the tropo...

Length-of-Day Variations Caused by El Nino-Southern Oscillation and Quasi-Biennial Oscillation.

Two prominent interannual atmospheric fluctuations, the El Niño-Southern Oscillation in the troposphere-ocean system and the Quasi-Biennial Oscillation in the equatorial stratosphere, account for most of the observed interannual length-of-day (LOD) variation from 1964 through 1987, with a relative contribution of about 2 to 1. Thus the atmosphere-LOD connection extends from seasonal and shorter...

Quasi-biennial corn yield cycles in Iowa

Quasi-biennial cycles are often reported in climate studies. The interannual El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) are two phenomena containing quasi-periodicities of approximately 2.5 and 2.2 years. It is known that ENSO affects corn yield throughweather patterns, NAO affects surface temperature and cloudiness, and surface temperature, rainfall, and radiation...

Revisiting the Influence of the Quasi-Biennial Oscillation on Tropical Cyclone Activity

The statistical relationship between the quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO) and tropical cyclone (TC) activity is explored, with a focus on the North Atlantic. Although there is a statistically significant relationship between the QBO and TCs in the Atlantic from the 1950s to the 1980s, as found by previous studies, that relationship is no longer present in later years. Several possibilities for ...

Quasi-biennial oscillation influence on long-period planetary waves in the Antarctic upper mesosphere

[1] Long-period planetary wave data derived from meteor wind observations recorded over a 12-year period with the SuperDARN radar at Halley, Antarctica, are presented and compared with the phase of the quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO) throughout the equatorial stratosphere. Enhanced planetary wave activity in the Antarctic upper mesosphere is found during the summer months, when the QBO in the ...
